Day 57 - remembering while forgetting
memories that last longer than names
Those long cold English nights, the short dark days. The kids from across the Commonwealth discovering their roots - or in my case, confirming what I already knew, I was African, like it or not, no matter how glamorous and exciting life in London was, the sky was never blue enough, and leaving to work and coming home in the dark on the tube was not fun. I’m grateful for it all, for the lessons in resilience that I learned, and for the people I met in those factories and building sites, and for what they taught me, knowingly or not.
On Norfolk Island love is like a bird
myz tintolla
he called me
my little owl
I’ve forgotten his name
but I remember the freckles on his nose
and the taste of his earlobe.
